Howard
Brandston, adjunct professor at the Lighting Research Center,
has been inducted into the Architectural Lighting Hall of Fame.
Brandston is one of nine to receive the honor, issued by Architectural
Lighting magazine for the first time this year. The award,
which will become an annual event, was created "to establish
a permanent recognition of lighting excellence and to celebrate
the industry's rich history," says Christina Trauthwein,
the magazines' editor-in-chief. Well-known for designing the lighting
for the Statue of Liberty as part of a restoration project, Brandston
has receive numerous awards for his work. 4/23/01
Two
of Curtis Breneman's graduate students won national awards
at the recent American Chemical Society Meeting in San Diego.
The Excellence Awards were given to Larry Lockwood Jr.
for his paper "Comparison of Genetic Algorithm-Based Descriptor
Selection Methods for QSAR." Co-authors of the paper are
Mark Embrechts, Breneman, and Kristin Bennett. C.
Matthew Sundling was honored for his paper "Advances
in Electronic Property-Encoded Molecular Shape Descriptors,"
also co-written by Breneman. The Excellence Awards are chosen
on the basis of the quality and significance of the research presented
and the strength of the supporting materials. 4/23/01
Natacha
DePaola, associate professor of biomedical engineering, recently
gave several invited lectures in Japan. She gave the plenary lecture
at the Sixth Meeting on Thrombosis and Rheology in Tokyo where
she discussed the regulation of endothelial cell function by shear
stress gradients. She also addressed the Graduate School of Mechanical
Engineering at Tohoku University in Sendai and the Departments
of Cardiovascular Physiology and Medical Engineering at the Okayama
University Medical School in Okayama. 4/23/01
Shivkumar
Kalyanaraman, assistant professor of electrical, computer,
and systems engineering, gave invited talks in February at MIT,
Carnegie Mellon University, and the Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency on the topic of "Edge-Based Traffic Management
in the Internet."4/23/01
Robert
Klancko, adjunct assistant professor in the Lally School of
Management & Technology and adjunct lecturer of metallurgy
in the Department of Engineering at Rensselaer at Hartford, was
awarded the Environmental Educator of the Year Award from the
Connecticut Outdoor Environmental Education Association (COEEA)
"for his excellent service as a classroom teacher, working
within the realm of formal education to provide environmental
education to his students
" Klancko also received the
Materials Engineer of the Year Award from the Materials Societies
of Connecticut at their 25th annual Materials Week Banquet. Only
eight people have received the award in the 25 years that Materials
Week has been observed. Klancko was honored for his 35 years of
dedicated service to the materials industry of Connecticut, and
for founding Connecticut Materials Week. 4/23/01
Kim
Rybczyk, women's basketball coach, Jennifer Hale, assistant
coach, Jennifer Parker, and Mark Pesce (team managers)
and the entire women's basketball team were invited to appear
before the Rensselaer County Legislature on April 10, where they
were honored with resolutions commending their outstanding championship
season and first-ever Upstate Athletics Association Championship
and NCAA Tournament Bid in the team's 26-year history. 4/23/01
