Nominations Sought for Dean of Graduate Education
A search committee has been formed to an internal conduct a search for a new dean of graduate education. The committee is seeking nominations by June 8.

The dean of graduate education has Institutewide oversight of the doctoral and master's programs. This position is responsible for assuring the overall quality of the graduate programs, assisting the academic schools in achieving their graduate educational and academic missions, coordinating the review of all existing and new graduate programs, administering graduate education policies, and providing administrative oversight of the Graduate School. The dean is responsible for the strategic planning, administrative planning, and budget processes of the Graduate School.

Candidates should possess the qualifications of a tenured full professor, and have significant involvement in both graduate education and research. Administrative experience is preferred.

Star Viewings Postponed
Weekly public viewings in the Hirsch Observatory will be postponed while repairs are being made to the roof of the Jonsson-Rowland Science Center.

Normally, when the sky is clear and weather permits, the observatory and its 16-inch telescope are open every Wednesday for three hours starting at sunset. The free viewings are expected to resume June 13 and continue through August.

Baseball Earns 10th Straight Trip to NCAAs
The Rensselaer baseball team has won the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) regular season championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. This year marks the 10th straight time—and 11th in 12 years—the Red Hawks (20-14 overall; 9-3 UCAA) have advanced to the double-elimination NCAA Tournament.

RPI, which is led by 17-year head coach Karl Steffen, will play in the 2001 NCAA Regional Tournament beginning either Thursday, May 17, or Friday, May 18, at a site to be announced. The winner of the Regional Tournament will play in the eight-team NCAA Division III World Series. 5/15/01



Benefit Performance
A benefit theatrical performance will be held Sunday, May 20, at 2:30 p.m. in the C + CC. Hosted by the friends and family of Joe White, the performance will raise funds for the purchase of a special van to assist White, a victim of a spinal cord injury.

Two short plays by Hamlin Garland, Mrs. Ripley's Trip and Uncle Ethan Ripley, will be performed in the Michael Chekhov method of acting.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. For more information, contact Helen Farnum at 271-7978.

MapInfo Breaks Ground in Tech Park
MapInfo Corp. is expanding its headquarters at the Rensselaer Technology Park and has entered into a long-term ground lease on property in the Park.

The company, founded by four students who dreamed up the mapping software company in a business class at Rensselaer, is constructing a four-story, 150,000-square-foot building that would be linked by an atrium to its current 60,000-square-foot headquarters in the Tech Park. Construction of the new facility is estimated at approximately $15 million. 5/7/01


Jury Duty!
The New York State Defenders Association (NYSDA) is seeking volunteers for a four-hour period on Tuesday, June 12, 8:30 a.m. to12:30 p.m., as part of the Defender Institute Basic Trial Skills program.

According to NYSDA, the program uses a combination of lectures, participant exercises, critiques, demonstrations, and video review to teach trial skills to new public defenders.

NYSDA is seeking people to act as members of a jury. If you have not participated previously and are interested in volunteering for this program, which will be held on campus, fill out the form at http://www.rpi.edu/~schwag/nysda2001.pdf.
