Nature Inspires DNA/Protein Nanoconstructions

  Campus   A new generation of nanoscale devices are being developed based on inspiration found in nature. Grazyna Sroga, a postdoctoral research associate at Rensselaer working in the laboratory of Professor Jonathan Dordick, is using DNA and related proteins to construct microscopic structures that may one day conduct electricity, deliver drugs, boost computer memory, or sense the presence or absence of chemicals. Stopping Artery Blockages Before They Begin

Lakshmi Santhanam, a graduate student at Rensselaer working with Professor Jonathan Dordick, is searching for molecules with properties that may someday be used as medicines able to pre-empt the damaging inflammatory response involved in atherosclerosis. More

Carbon Nanotubes Prove Sensitive to the Elements

Saroj Nayak is one of the few researchers in the country studying how molecules affect the electrical conductivity of single-walled carbon nanotubes. Understanding what molecules increase or decrease nanotube conductivity is key in the development of ultra-sensitive devices that could detect the slightest traces of air-borne toxins such as anthrax or pollutants in drinking water. Japanese Drumming Troupe at West Hall

Taikoza, a Japanese percussion group, gave a free performance March 22 in the West Hall Auditorium. Approximately 120 attended the show, sponsored by the Rensselaer Union Performing Arts Committee. Drawing from Japan's rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza uses the powerful rhythms of taiko drums “to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences in a new dimension of excitement.” More

Groundhog Job Shadow Day

A number of Rensselaer staff participated in “Groundhog Job Shadow Day” March 11 at the Heffner Alumni House. The one-day event was sponsored by the Division of Human Resources to provide high school students with an up-close look at what a “real job” is like and how the skills they learn in school are put to use in the workplace. More

Science Fair March 22

Approximately 60 top local high school science students were on campus March 22 for the 13th annual Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair and Science Congress, cosponsored by Rensselaer, the Eastern Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State, and GE. Several members of the Rensselaer community were involved in planning the event and judging the students’ entries. More
