Fireworks Show Kicks Off GM Week: Note Change of Date
Rensselaer's 119th annual Grand Marshal Week will kick off with a fireworks show on Friday, April 11, at 8:30 p.m., in the upper Renwyck Field behind the Houston Field House. The Alonzo Fireworks Company will present a 20-minute display to start off a festive week of student elections and celebration. Grand Marshal Week 2003 will be held April 4-12. First held in 1884 after student government elections, GM Week is a celebration of student involvement at Rensselaer. More than 30 individual events are planned by student clubs and organizations, fraternities and sororities, and campus departments. The week culminates in the elections of the Grand Marshal (student body president) and the President of the Union, along with class council and Faculty Senate positions. To prevent harm to fireworks spectators, no foot and vehicle traffic will be allowed on the perimeter roads (i.e. Georgian Terrace to Kellogg Road to Sunset Terrace to Forsythe Drive) to the Upper Renwyck and Willie Stanton Fields. Security will close the roads to traffic from 7:30 p.m. until the end of the show, which will be around 8:30 p.m. In addition, viewing from the Harkness Field will not be permitted. Spectators are asked to stand near the
resident halls, on the B lot parking lot, or the lower Renwyck field.
If you must move your car from a parking area near the housing areas,
please do this before 7:15 p.m. or wait until after 8:45 p.m. For more information, contact the Rensselaer Union at ext. 6505. 3/31/03
Herta Leng Lecture April 2 Melissa Hines, associate professor of chemistry at Cornell, will deliver the seventh Herta Leng Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, April 2, at 4 p.m. in room 4050 of the Low Center for Industrial Innovation. Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. in the Low Gallery. Hines will speak on "Adventures in Silicon Etching: From Atomic Scale Physics to the Control of Micromechanical Losses." Bridging physics and chemistry, Hines is interested in understanding and controlling the nanoscale properties of surfaces using chemical etching. She will show that etchants literally inscribe a record of their reactivity in the etched surface and that surface chemistry can be used to control the mechanical properties of micromechanical devices. After taking freshman chemistry at Rensselaer in a summer program for high school students, Hines obtained a S.B. degree from MIT and earned a Ph.D. at Stanford University. During her career she was a Beckman Young Investigator, a Lilly Teaching Fellow, a Cottrell Scholar, and received an NSF CAREER Award. The Herta Leng Lecture series was established in honor of Leng, a Rensselaer professor of physics at who died in 1997 at the age of 94. In 1966, she became the first woman named a full professor at Rensselaer. For more information, contact Kay Gagliardi at gaglik@rpi.edu. 3/24/03
Garnet Baltimore Lecture April 7 Morris H. Morgan III, dean of Hampton University’s School of Engineering and Technology, will deliver the 13th annual Garnet Baltimore lecture on Monday, April 7, at 3:30 p.m. in room 4050 of the Low Center for Industrial Innovation. A reception will precede the talk at 2:30 p.m. While dean, Morgan has overseen the establishment of two affiliated centers, the Virtual Parts Manufacturing Center and the Bio-Photonics Center, and the school’s first independent center, Hampton University’s Aero Propulsion Center, recently funded by NASA. During his tenure, the school has added a new undergraduate program in computer engineering and will introduce a new undergraduate program in mechanical engineering in the fall of 2003. Morgan earned his doctorate in chemical engineering from Rensselaer in 1978, a master’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Dayton in 1973, and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Vanderbilt University in 1969. His industrial experiences (13 years) include employment with General Motors, Monsanto, and GE’s Corporate Research and Development Center. Morgan is the author or co-author of more than 70 scientific articles, he has given over 50 presentations both domestically and internationally, and holds four U.S. patents. The Garnet Baltimore Lecture Series is sponsored by Rensselaer's Office of Institute Diversity. The annual series, which focuses on issues of equality and cultural diversity, was established in 1991 in honor of Baltimore, Rensselaer's first African-American graduate, Class of 1881. A distinguished civil engineer and landscape designer, Baltimore is known locally for the design of Prospect Park in Troy. 3/24/03
Rensselaer United Way Contributions Continue to Grow Rensselaer’s 2002 United Way campaign closed in December. This year’s effort was a tremendous success, generating a total of $125,000 in donations from Rensselaer employees. The campaign was coordinated by Cynthia McIntyre, chief of staff, Cindy Novak of the Provost’s Office, Barbara Stubblebine from the School of Architecture, and Lu Uber from the Office of the Vice President for Research. Committee members included Anne Bilynsky, Bonnie Carson, Tracey DiScanio, JoAnn Drost, Barbara Dzembo, Denise Elwell, Phylis Federici, Traci Griffin, Vicki Messick, Mauvorneen Roy, Cynthia Smith, Tanya Struzinsky, and Lori Winslow. “The campaign’s effectiveness is due in large part to the active participation of over 80 volunteers representing every administrative and academic unit on campus,” says McIntyre. Over the past three years these volunteers have helped Rensselaer increase its United Way donations by 34 percent, boosting the total contribution from $94,000 to $125,000. The number of employees participating and their individual donations has also grown each year. 3/24/03
