IFC Passes Community Relations Resolution
On Wednesday, Feb. 26, the Interfraternity Council
(IFC) unanimously approved a resolution vowing to improve the
relationship of Rensselaer's fraternities with the neighborhoods
surrounding campus.

"Passing this resolution is definitely
a positive move for Rensselaer's fraternities and for the
community as well. It just reinforces the wish of both groups
to peacefully coexist and make living in Troy a pleasant experience."

The aptly named Resolution on Community Relations
calls for better interactions and communication with the people
living in the areas around the university, and reaffirms the Greek
body's dedication to carrying out community service and philanthropy
projects in the city.
"Passing this resolution is definitely a
positive move for Rensselaer's fraternities and for the community
as well," said Mark Smith, dean of students. "It just
reinforces the wish of both groups to peacefully coexist and make
living in Troy a pleasant experience."
"I am extremely pleased to see this resolution
come to fruition," said Travis J. Lull '05, vice president
of public relations for the IFC. "It shows that fraternities
at Rensselaer are mature members of the community, and that the
group as a whole wants to cultivate its already constructive rapport
with the city of Troy."
Lull added that the IFC has already made plans
to send its representatives to various community events to discuss
the resolution and develop more fraternity outreach activities
in the future.
The full text of the resolution is as follows:
"We, the members of the Interfraternity
Council at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, recognize the deteriorated
state of relations between fraternities and their neighbors
and will improve relationships between our member chapters and
the Troy community. In an effort to achieve such, we are willing
and intend to increase communication with residents and contribute
to the community. We will send delegates to community meetings
to both address and attempt resolution of any future conflicts.
Community service and philanthropy are an ever growing focus
of the fraternity system at Rensselaer and we are committed
to giving our part to the community in which we dwell. We ask
for your tolerance in our ongoing endeavor and to communicate
with us with any issues you may have."
