Construction Update
Work continues apace on several major construction
projects and infrastructure improvements on campus, according
to Oleh Turczak, Rensselaer's project manager. Nearly all subcontracts
have been awarded on the building projects.

"This is an exciting time to be part of the
Rensselaer campus being able to see that part of The
Rensselaer Plan in the making, with all the great opportunities
that these major projects bring to our students, faculty, staff
and the surrounding community," said Amr Abdel-Azim, senior
executive for capital projects.
In April 2002, the Troy City Planning Commission
and the Troy Industrial Development Authority approved $220 million
in tax-exempt bonds to help finance Rensselaer's plans for construction
and improvements. The plans include a 218,000-square-foot biotechnology
center, a 500-car parking garage, a boiler plant, a chiller plant,
a center for experimental media and performing arts, and related
improvements to campus landscaping and infrastructure. The projects,
totaling $255 million, were approved by Rensselaer's Board of
Trustees in December 2001.

Foundations are complete and structural steel
is being erected for the biotechnology center. Turczak says the
steel supporting the glass atrium will start to go up in April
and the building enclosure, glazing, and exterior walls will be
in by early fall.
Work on the parking garage continues on schedule.
The building, a pre-cast concrete structure whose components are
being prefabricated in Vermont, will begin to take shape in May
when the pre-cast begins to be erected on campus. Turczak anticipates
that the garage will be open for the spring 2004 semester.
