"Humanities@Rensselaer" Lecture Series Begins March 6

Digital artist, scientist, commercial designer, and educator John Maeda will deliver the first 2003 "Humanities@Rensselaer" lecture on Thursday, March 6 at 4 p.m. in Room 3510 of Sage Laboratory.

Maeda, who is the Muriel Cooper Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab and director of the Aesthetics and Computation Group (ACG), was awarded the National Design Award, the nation's highest honor in design, in 2001. He has been described as "one of the world's leading experimental graphic designers" and his work will be the subject of a major exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London next summer.

"In addition to his artistic and commercial work, Professor Maeda is a completely committed educator, who has said that 'education is the highest form of intellectual philanthropy,' said John Harrington, dean of humanities and social sciences, "He is an artist with the insight to understand the great power of technology in education."

The series will continue on April 16 with Steven Barley, co-director of the center for Work Technology and Organization at Stanford University. On April 24, Milton Glaser, one of the pre-eminent American graphic designers, will speak.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day March 11

On Tuesday, March 11, approximately 25 11th and 12th grade students from Waterford-Halfmoon High School will "shadow" Rensselaer employees as part of Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2003. The goal of this event is to provide students with an up-close look at what a "real job" is like and how the skills they learn in school are put to use in the workplace.

The student participants will be welcomed to campus by Curtis Powell, vice president of human resources. "We are very excited to provide them an opportunity to see the link between what they are learning now in school and careers that lie ahead of them."

According to a study by the Kravis Leadership Institute in Southern California, students who job shadow are more likely to finish high school and obtain a four-year degree.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day 2003 is being made possible by a consortium of organizations interested in promoting volunteerism and school-to-work training for young people. Participating organizations include Junior Achievement, America's Promise, and the United States Department of Labor.

To learn more about the March 11 event, contact Beverly Pruitt, director of employee relations and development, at pruitb@rpi.edu or ext. 6038. For more on Groundhog Job Shadow Day, visit the Web site at www.jobshadow.org. 2/24/03
