Christopher Jaffe '49 To Deliver Herta Leng Memorial Lecture
Christopher Jaffe '49, one of the foremost concert and theater hall acousticians, will speak on the "Design and Acoustics of Concert Halls" when he presents the sixth annual Herta Leng Memorial Lecture Wednesday, March 6, at 4 p.m. in Room 4050 of the Low Center for Industrial Innovation.

Jaffe, founder and chairman of Jaffe Holden Acoustics, was the acoustician for the renovation of Severance Concert Hall in Cleveland, home of the Cleveland Orchestra, and for the third stage of the renovation of Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. In addition to numerous other halls, among them the Assembly Hall of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-Day Saints, he worked as a consultant for various theater constructions and renovations, including the Centro Nacional de las Artes Opera House in Mexico City.

His many honors include an Award of the American Institute of Acoustics, the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, and fellowships in several professional societies. Jaffe has been adjunct professor of architectural acoustics at Rensselaer, at the Juilliard School of Music, and the City University of New York and taught at Harvard, Yale, and other academic institutions.

The Herta Leng Memorial Lecture series was established in honor of Herta Leng, a professor of physics at Rensselaer from 1943 to 1968 who died in 1997 at the age of 94. In 1966, she became the first woman named a full professor at Rensselaer. The lecture is sponsored by the Department of Physics, Applied Physics & Astronomy. Refreshments will be served beginning at 3:30 p.m. 1/28/02
