New Fellowships Established in Architecture
and H&SS
President Shirley Ann Jackson has announced
a new program of graduate fellowships to facilitate the
growth of doctoral-level study in the Schools of Architecture
and Humanities and Social Sciences.
The Rensselaer Humanities, Arts, and Social
Sciences (HASS) Fellowship Program will begin with the 2004-2005
academic year and will award competitive fellowships to
advanced Ph.D. students in the two schools.
The fellowships will provide full tuition
and a $16,000 stipend for each of two years. A third year
of support is possible, based upon a performance evaluation
at the end of the second year.
The HASS Fellowship Program will provide
the support necessary for students to produce exemplary
dissertation research, said Jackson.
"It is my intent not only to provide
fundamental support for the doctoral-level programs in the
Schools of Architecture and Humanities and Social Sciences,
but also to motivate faculty within these schools to pursue
additional external funding and other support," said
Jackson.
The Institute has committed to fund five
fellowships each in fall '04, '05, and '06. The schools
are required to seek external support for additional fellowships.
With increased external and Institute support, the program
could eventually provide as many as 20 fellowships each
year.
Eligibility
Doctoral students in H&SS and Architecture who have
completed 30 credits will be eligible for this program.
Two of the five fellowships available for the first three
years will be reserved for architecture students. Three
fellowships will be reserved for H&SS students.
Application Process
The HASS Fellowship Program will begin with academic year
'04-'05. Applications for fellowships that year will be
evaluated in spring '04.
Fellowships will be awarded on a competitive
basis. A committee made up of faculty from the School of
Architecture and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences
will review and rank all applications.
The application will be similar to the application
for NSF Graduate Research Fellowships, including
1) Description of prior experience and
preparation.
2) Plan of study.
3) Overview of planned research.
4) Description of future research and career plans.
Applicants will also be required to submit
a curriculum vitae and a transcript.
Application materials will be available
soon.
