Accolades: March 18, 2002

Cinzia Abbate, adjunct associate professor of architecture and director of the Roman Studies program, was honored at the Energy Globe Award gala dinner, celebrating the best international projects that used renewable energies. Abate’s innovative photovoltaic roof for the Children's Museum of Rome was one the best 10 selected among 1,300 projects from 98 countries. 3/18/02

Caren Canier, associate professor of arts, has an exhibition of paintings at Boston University's Sherman Gallery through April 21. On Saturday, April 20, Canier will receive the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2002 from the College of Fine Arts at Boston University. She will give a gallery talk following the presentation of awards. 3/18/02

Luciano Castillo, assistant professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, won the Robert T. Knapp Award from the Fluids Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Castillo's paper, "Characterizing Turbulent Boundary Layers Subject to Strong Adverse Pressure Gradient With Eventual Separation," was recognized as an "outstanding original paper resulting directly from analytical or laboratory research." The award will be presented at the Summer Fluids Engineering Conference this July in Montreal. 3/18/02

James Ferris, professor emeritus of chemistry and director of the New York Center for Studies on the Origins of Life, was an invited speaker March 19 at the Smithsonian. Ferris' talk, "Origins and Evolution of Life on Earth and Elsewhere," was part of the lecture series "Life Story of the Universe." 3/18/02

Lester Gerhardt was selected by the ASEE Engineering Research Council as the first recipient of the Research Administration Award, given for administration, development, and innovation in research. This includes achievement in developing and supporting programs that lead to substantial research success of colleagues; achievement in the development and implementation of a major research initiative that has a substantial positive impact on research; promotion of research and development excellence; and major innovations in the administration of research excellence. The award was presented in at the 2002 ERC Summit, Workshop and Forum in February. 3/18/02

Sydney Ross, professor emeritus of chemistry, has been elected a corresponding fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a designation reserved for fellows residing abroad. The fellowship was awarded in recognition of Ross' distinguished career in science and for his founding of the James Clerk Maxwell Museum, located in Maxwell's home in Edinburgh, Scotland. Ross received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree last year from the Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh) based on a similar citation. 3/18/02
