Jonathan
Dordick, the Howard P. Isermann Professor of Chemical Engineering
and chair of the department, recently accepted a position to serve
on the editorial board of Metabolic Engineering. The journal,
published by Academic Press, is the first of its kind devoted
to the field of metabolic engineering. 2/26/01
James
Tien, professor and chair of decision sciences and engineering
systems, has been elected as vice president of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Publications, Products
and Services. Tien is responsible for the publishing activities
of the IEEE, the world's largest technical professional society.
As vice president, he also serves as chair of the IEEE Publications,
Products and Services Board, and as a member of the IEEE board
of directors and executive committee. 2/26/01
Sydney
Ross, emeritus professor of chemistry, will receive the honorary
degree of Doctor of Science from the Heriot-Watt University of
Edinburgh, Scotland, at its next commencement. The citation is
for his distinguished career in science and for his outstanding
role in developing the James Clerk Maxwell Foundation. Ross taught
at Rensselaer for 32 years, during which time he published extensively
and supervised 35 Ph.D. dissertations. In 1977, he created the
James Clerk Maxwell Foundation in memory of the great Scottish
scientist. The foundation has its headquarters in Clerk Maxwell's
birthplace in Edinburgh, where a museum dedicated to Clerk Maxwell
has been established. Ross also has a lecture series named in
his honor by his former students at Rensselaer.

Barbara Ruel, director of women in engineering
programs, delivered a talk Feb. 7 at the annual conference "Facts,
Choices and Challenges: Nontraditional Opportunities in Career
and Technical Education" sponsored by the New York State
Project for Nontraditional Training and Employment. The conference
attracted more than 150 educators, administrators, and counselors
from New York state high schools and two-year colleges. Ruel spoke
about Rensselaer's efforts to recruit and retain women in engineering
degree programs. 2/26/01
