Last Monday
and Tuesday's snow storm dropped more than 20 inches of snow onto
the area. The storm, one of the biggest snow storms in the last
50 years, forced the cancellation of classes on both days.
Dining
Hall Closed
Due to spring break, the Russell Sage Dining Hall Faculty Staff
Dining Room will be closed for lunch service on Monday, March
12 through Friday, March 16. The dining room will reopen to the
campus on Monday, March 19.
Lunch service will be available to the campus community during
this time at the Rensselaer Union McNeil Room.

A Trustee Speaks to the Faculty
Trustee John Carr '77 will be this year's speaker at the revived
"A Trustee Speaks to the Faculty" annual talk sponsored
by the Rensselaer Chapter of the American Association of University
Professors (AAUP). The talk, titled "Thoughts on University
Governance," will be Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. in 4050
CII. After an opening statement by Carr, the floor will be opened
to questions and discussion. All faculty are invited to attend.

Reception
to Honor Jackson, Tien for NAE Membership
A campuswide reception is scheduled for Tuesday, March 20, 2-4
p.m. in Russell Sage Dining Hall to honor President Shirley Ann
Jackson and Professor James Tien '66 for their recent induction
into the National Academy of Engineering. Election to the NAE
is the highest professional distinction accorded an engineer.
Academy membership honors those who have made "important
contributions to engineering theory and practice."

Call
for Nominations: Trustees' Outstanding Teacher Award
Nominations are invited from the Rensselaer community for the
Trustees' Outstanding Teacher Award. This award, which is given
annually, recognizes outstanding accomplishments in classroom
instruction and consists of a $5,000 honorarium.
The selection will be made based on evidence of sustained outstanding
teaching as reflected by student evaluations from the last two
years, peer evaluations, and letters of support from colleagues,
alumni, and students.
Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee and recommended
to the president for approval. Please submit nominations by March
24 to G. P. "Bud" Peterson, provost. For more information,

Herta
Leng Memorial Lecture Scheduled
Alan Fowler '51, a researcher at the IBM Watson Research Center,
will deliver the fifth annual Herta Leng Memorial Lecture Wednesday,
March 28, at 4 p.m. in 318 DCC. Fowler will speak about "The
Synergy Between Physics and Engineering, A Personal View."
Fowler
is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National
Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He is a fellow of the IEEE and the APS. His main research fields
are semiconductor physics and semiconductor devices. Fowler received
his bachelor's in physics in 1951 and a master's in 1952 from
Rensselaer.

The Herta Leng Memorial Lecture series was established in honor
of Herta Leng, a professor of physics at Rensselaer from 1943
to 1968 who died in 1997 at the age of 94. In 1966, she became
the first woman named a full professor at Rensselaer.

Rensselaer
is sponsoring a night on WMHT's 2001 Great TV Auction. Volunteers
are needed Sunday, April 29, 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. to take bids
and to help in the studio. Here's your chance to support a worthy
cause, have some fun, and be on TV! Volunteers will need to be
at the WMHT studio in Schenectady during the entire shift. Free
