Play it Safe on Campus

Rensselaer's Department of Public Safety strives to maintain a safe and secure campus. Bernie Drobnicki, director of public safety, offers some tips to ensure the campus community works together to maintain a safe campus throughout the year.

“If you see any sort of suspicious activity, immediately report it to Public Safety at ext. 6611,” says Drobnicki. “Our officers will take immediate action and if necessary alert the appropriate authorities to assist, verify details, and then issue a Crime Awareness Alert so that others can be made aware.”

Crime Awareness Alert
In the event of suspicious and threatening activity, Public Safety issues “Crime Awareness Alerts.” Crime alerts are posted on building bulletin boards on both the academic and residential campus. Crime alerts are usually posted for serious criminal classifications, such as: arson, aggravated assault, robbery, and sex offenses. A daily crime log is available at Public Safety for review during the business day. You can find crime awareness alerts at www.rpi.edu/dept/public_safety/crimalrt.html

Blue Lights
Know the locations of emergency call boxes on campus, recommends Drobnicki. The call boxes, which are phones distinctly marked with a blue light, are located in all residential and academic areas for convenience and safety. “As you walk around campus, make a point of learning where the emergency phones are located,” says Drobnicki.

Panic Alarms
There are also panic alarm buttons placed in athletic facility locker rooms. If pressed, these alarms will immediately alert Public Safety and pinpoint the victim’s location.

Know the Numbers
Keep a list of these important numbers with you at all times. It’s a helpful reference, in the event of an emergency.

• EMERGENCY (answered 24 hours) 276-6611
• Non-Emergency (24 Hours) 276-6656
• Investigations 276-6603
• Ambulance 276-6611
• Public Safety Administration 276-8527
• 24/7 Safety Escort 276-6656
• Public Safety Information Line (Closings/Delays) 276-6600

Rensselaer maintains Campus Safety and Preparedness and Public Safety websites. Bookmark them at www.rpi.edu/safecampus/ and www.rpi.edu/dept/public_safety.

“These sites offer one-stop shopping for many of the safety concerns the campus community may have,” says Drobnicki. “You’ll find helpful links to authoritative facts about everything from anthrax to SARS.”
