Accolades

Sharon Anderson-Gold, professor of science and technology studies, gave a paper titled "Extending Respect for Nature" at the conference on Value Inquiry at the University of North Dakota April 12. She also provided commentary on a paper called "Dependent and Corrupt Agency" for the meeting of the North American Kant Society with the American Philosophical Association in Cleveland on April 24, and critiqued a book by Donald Brown titled American Heat: Ethical Problems with the US Position on Global Warming at a meeting of the Society for Environmental Ethics with the American Philosophical Association in Cleveland on April 25. 6/16/03

Kate Boyer, clinical assistant professor of science and technology studies, gave a talk titled "Mobility and Fixity: Changing Geographies of Sex and Scale in the early 20th Century Financial Services Sector" at the National Meeting of the Association of American Geographers in New Orleans in March. She also gave an invited lecture in the Department of Geography for Vassar College titled "For Home and Country? Narratives of Nationalism in the Early Twentieth-Century White-Collar Workplace" in April 3. 6/16/03

Nancy Campbell, assistant professor of science and technology studies, gave an invited lecture titled "Whose Rights? What Privacy? Advocating for Reproductive Rights in a Time of Contraction" and participated in seminars at Dartmouth for the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences in February. She also gave a conference paper on the genetics of vulnerability to addiction at the 2003 annual meeting of the Organization of American Historians (OAH) in Memphis on April 5. 6/16/03

Linnda Caporael gave an invited lecture titled, "Steps to an Ecology of Robot and Other Minds," and participated in a workshop, “Social Studies of Social Robotics,” at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif., in April. She also gave an invited lecture titled "Group Identity: An Evolutionary Basis for Teamwork" and participated in an interdisciplinary workshop, "Teamwork: A Multiprofessional Workshop," at Oxford University, April 9-10. 6/16/03

Michael Century, professor and chair of arts, has accepted to serve on the International Advisory Committee of the International Symposium on Electronic Arts. The next symposium will occur at Helsinki, Stockholm in August 2004. Century also was one of four speakers in a symposium at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in New York City, presenting the findings of a new report from the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, National Research Council, titled "Beyond Productivity: Information Technology, Innovation, and Creativity," on May 15. Century was a member of the study committee. 6/16/03

William Massie, associate professor of architecture, is featured in Microsoft's new Windows XP Tablet PC advertisement in the May 2003 issue of Architectural Digest. Massie has received international attention with Progressive Architecture awards from Architecture Magazine for his designs of the "Big Belt House" located in the foothills of the Big Belt Mountains in Montana (2000) and "House for a Photographer" (2002). Winner of the 2002 Museum of Modern Art's prestigious Young Architects Program Competition for his installation, "Playa Urbana / Urban Beach," Massie was also named one of Esquire magazine's “Best and Brightest” of 2002. Priya Nambisan, a second-year graduate student in LL&C, has been awarded a summer fellowship to the Internet Scholars Program (WebShop). Participants will travel for workshops at three locations: the University of Maryland, Stanford University, and UC Berkeley. The intent of the fellowship is to give young researchers while they are graduate students time and resources to develop their own proposed research projects during the fellowship workshops and research tools, and promote the growth of a network of young researchers who are familiar with each others' work. 6/16/03

Student-athletes Claire Lears, Sharath Alampur, Jeff Banks, and Ryan Quiller have all been selected to Verizon Academic All-District 1 College Division Track & Field/Cross Country First Teams. All four are now eligible for Verizon National All-America consideration. Lears, a junior materials engineering major with a management minor, was chosen to the Women's First Team. A middle-distance runner from Brookeville, Md., she has a 3.84 cumulative grade point average. Alampur, a junior from Ossining, N.Y., who carries a 4.0 GPA in math and computer science, competes in the triple jump. Banks, who participates in the pole vault, is a second-year captain who won the indoor titles at this year's UCAA, New York State and ECAC Meets. From Salt Lake City, Banks is a graduate student in math with a 4.00 grade point average. Quiller, a senior pole vaulter from West Point, N.Y., has a 4.0 cumulative GPA as a math and physics dual major. 6/16/03

Colin Tory, track and field head coach, has been named the 2003 Atlantic Region Division III Men's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year by the United States Track Coaches Association. Tory, who is in his third season as the head coach of Rensselaer's men's and women's programs, is one of only eight Division III coaches around the country to earn a regional honor. This season, Tory led Rensselaer's men's team to its second consecutive New York State Collegiate Track Championship (NYSCTC) Meet title with a meet record 204 points. He was named the NYSCTC Men's Coach of the Year for the second straight season. Tory, who also coaches the Engineers' men's and women's cross country teams, recently completed his seventh season at Rensselaer. 6/16/03

Lucas Ruglis has been named to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men's Lacrosse Upstate Second Team. A junior attack, Ruglis led Rensselaer to a 10-3 overall record and the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) regular season championship (5-1). Ruglis was first on the Red Hawks with 47 points, including 30 goals and a team-best 17 assists. 6/16/03

Seth Shuket and Pat Hughes have been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Baseball First Team. Shuket, a senior catcher, and Hughes, a senior outfielder, led Rensselaer to its eighth consecutive league title and 12th straight NCAA Regional appearance this season. 6/16/03

Leanna Smith, a senior catcher, and Amy Huling, a freshman designated hitter, have been chosen to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Upstate Softball First Team. Stephanie Vanek, a freshman shortstop, was selected as an All-ECAC Honorable Mention. 6/16/03
