Sciences. His appointment begins July 1.
Drew, the Eliza Ricketts Professor of Applied
Mathematics for the past eight years, has been a Rensselaer

Drew's new appointment as chair comes at
a time of promising growth in the Mathematical Sciences
Department.
Rensselaer's doctoral program in applied
mathematics is ranked No. 21 in the country by U.S. News
& World Report. The Institute is tied with Harvard,
Rutgers, Arizona, Colorado at Boulder, and SUNY at Stony
Brook.
"My goal is to continue to raise the
department's visibility," says Drew.
Part of that goal will be to fill several
academic positions that will complement the current strengths
in applied math. Those strengths include unique applications
in several engineering and science disciplines, including
biotechnology and environmental science.
"Don and I have known each other for
more than 30 years," said Joseph Flaherty, dean of
the School of Science. "We shared an office at NYU
and joined Rensselaer within six months of one another.
We've collaborated on a number of research projects in the
past and I'm looking forward to working together to propel
Rensselaer, the School of Science, and mathematical sciences
to the highest levels."
