Eddie Ade Knowles, vice president of student life, introduced Ken Ralph as the new director of athletics at Rensselaer Thursday, May 30 at a 3:30 p.m. press conference in the Mueller Center.

At Rensselaer, Ralph will oversee the Institute’s 23 NCAA intercollegiate varsity teams – 11 of which are women’s – and three junior varsity squads, involving nearly 600 students. More

Christin Choma
Biochemist Builds “Designer Enzymes”
While other biochemists unravel the mysteries of natural enzymes, Christin Choma, associate professor of biochemistry, is attempting to design completely synthetic ones from scratch.

The process, called de novo protein design, should one day allow Choma and other protein designers to construct catalytic proteins with unique characteristics. More

Michael Shur Receives Humboldt Award
Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon Roberts ’48 Chair in Solid State Electronics at Rensselaer, was selected as a recipient of a coveted Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany.

Rensselaer at Hartford Professor Named to United Nations Delegation
William Luddy Jr., professor of management at Rensselaer at Hartford, was named to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL). He participated in the UNCITRAL Working Group on E-Commerce at its March session in New York. More

Baseball Team Plays World Series
For the second time in its history, Rensselaer’s baseball team advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series. The team reached the second round of play, but suffered close losses at the hands of the College of New Jersey (6-5) and eventual NCAA champs Eastern Connecticut State (9-8). More
