Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon
Roberts '48 Professor of Solid State Electronics and director
of the Center for Broadband Data Transport Science and Technology
at Rensselaer, has been honored as one of the first “Blue
Spectrum Pioneers” by CompoundSemi News Online.
Shur was honored "for extraordinary contributions to
blue spectrum development and faith in the future."
“Blue spectrum solid-state light
emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes made of Group III
nitride materials are revolutionizing the world of lighting
and optical storage,” writes Jo Ann McDonald, founding
editor of CompoundSemi News. “The history
of their evolution is the classic ‘20-year overnight
success story.’ The visionaries who pioneered the
commercial applications kept chipping away, and finally,
in 2003, the blue spectrum industry is tapping the Mother
Lode.”
According to CompoundSemi News,
“Shur’s Introduction to Solid State Lighting,
co-authored by Artusa Zukauskas and Remis Caska, is now
the textbook in this quickly evolving, truly revolutionary
field.” CompoundSemi News is published by
the Compound Semiconductor Foundation.
