The LRC’s
Narendran Elected Fellow of IESNA
Nadarajah Narendran, director of research at Rensselaer’s
Lighting Research Center (LRC), has been named a fellow
of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America
(IESNA). The designation is given annually to a member of
the society who has made a valuable contribution to the
society’s technical activities and to the illumination
science and engineering profession. Narendran — the
fourth LRC faculty member to receive the honor, along with
Peter Boyce, Russell Leslie, and Mark Rea — will be
honored with the fellow pin in August during the IESNA Annual
Conference in Chicago.

Narendran was chosen for his pioneering
research and educational activities in the area of solid-state
lighting. He was also cited for his leadership in bridging
the science of solid-state lighting to mainstream lighting
applications.
“Narendran is the international leader
in the evaluation and application of solid-state lighting,”
said Russell Leslie, associate director of the LRC. “His
objective evaluations and numerous lectures, papers, and
classes are a stimulus to the advances in advanced lighting
technologies.”
Narendran received a Ph.D. in physics from
the University of Rhode Island, and joined the LRC in 1996.
As director of research, he is responsible for managing
the LRC’s research staff and directing research projects.
As a faculty member in the School of Architecture, Narendran
teaches Physics of Light in the graduate education
program and oversees graduate student thesis projects. He
is the author of more than 50 articles related to light
sources, LEDs, and fiber-optic systems, and he holds several
U.S. patents. He has also chaired several conferences, and
reviewed proposals and papers for professional societies
and government agencies. He will serve as a conference chair
for next month’s Third Annual Conference on Solid
State Lighting, hosted by the International Society for
Optical Engineering.
