Dale Masten Named Pillar of Rensselaer

Dale Masten, assistant to the dean of architecture, has received the 2003 Pillars of Rensselaer Award, the highest honor Rensselaer gives to a staff member. The award was presented at the 31st Annual Service Recognition & Retirement Dinner held June 27 at The Desmond in Albany. The Pillars Award is presented annually to a staff member who understands the Institute's mission and history, has been a role model for other employees, has showed concern for students and their welfare, has added to the human dimension of the school, and who has played an active role in his or her home community. Early Infection and Rejection Detection: Microdialysis Technique May Help Implants Stay Put Longer

Millions of medical devices, including catheters, pacemakers, vascular grafts, and glucose sensors, are regularly implanted into humans. Julie Stenken, associate professor of analytical chemistry, has received a four-year, $750,000 grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) to develop a new technique to study the body’s reaction to implants at the cellular level. The microdialysis technique can provide information that may someday help doctors spot infection earlier and prevent rejection of implanted medical devices from occurring. More

The LRC’s Narendran Elected Fellow of IESNA

Nadarajah Narendran, director of research at Rensselaer’s Lighting Research Center (LRC), has been named a fellow of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). The designation is given annually to a member of the society who has made a valuable contribution to the society’s technical activities and to the illumination science and engineering profession. Narendran — the fourth LRC faculty member to receive the honor, along with Peter Boyce, Russell Leslie, and Mark Rea — will be honored with the fellow pin in August during the IESNA Annual Conference in Chicago. More

Formula SAE Team Takes Second Place in UK Competition

Rensselaer’s Formula SAE team drove its student-designed and built racecar to a second-place finish at Formula Student, a worldwide collegiate design and engineering competition held annually in the United Kingdom. More
