Rensselaer Welcomes Class of 2006

Another exceptional group of students will enter Rensselaer this fall. The Class of 2006 boasts an average SAT score of 1312, up from last year's record 1308 average, and 64 percent of the students were in the top 10 percent of their high school class. In fact, 32 enrolling students scored 800 on the math SAT examination, 13 achieved an 800 verbal score, and two had a perfect 1600!

The number of Rensselaer Medalists continues to grow, with 227 (20 percent) choosing to enroll at Rensselaer for this fall. And the number of "legacies" — students with a parent or relative who is a Rensselaer graduate — also increased, from 48 in fall 2001 to 72 this year. Nine percent of the members of the Class of 2006 are underrepresented groups.

"Every year the cohort of students joining our community of scholars becomes more diverse, more interesting, and more demanding of education innovation in the 21st century. This class is no exception!" said Teresa Duffy, dean of enrollment management. "The faculty, students, and staff who helped engage these students all believe that this Class of 2006 will be a dynamic and distinctive addition to campus — and the class just asks us to 'watch their dust!'"

The class members bring a breadth of experiences including: publishing crossword puzzles in The New York Times; carrying the Olympic torch for this year's Winter Games; and co-creating "The Wings of Witness," an 8-ton butterfly constructed of bottle tabs, with each tab representing a Holocaust victim.

This month, members of the incoming Class of 2006 who live nearby will take part in required Student Orientation (SO) sessions on campus. International students and those living more than 300 miles away will take part in an SO session in August before classes begin.

The two-day SO sessions include meetings with faculty and current students; online registration for fall classes; introductions to various campus resources, policies, and programs; and a series of interactive group activities facilitated by the Archer Center for Student Leadership Development. A separate "family orientation" will introduce parents and families to Rensselaer's campus and academic life.
