Wilfredo Colon, assistant professor of chemistry, has received the 2002 Rensselaer Early Career Award, which honors productivity in both teaching and research. 6/3/02
Faye Duchin, dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and professor of economics, made a presentation at the Industrial Ecology of Consumption Workshop, hosted by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Vienna, Austria, May 9-10. 6/3/02
Robert Krull, professor of language, literature, and communication, received the Office of Professional and Distance Educations 2002 Excellence in Teaching Award. Established last year, the Excellence in Teaching Award is based on course evaluations completed by students each semester. Krull received his award at the RSVP Commencment reception May 17. 6/3/02
Richard Lahey 64, the Edward E. Hood Professor of Engineering at Rensselaer, spoke about sonoluminescence and bubble fusion at Purdue University recently. The talk was organized by the nuclear physics department. Lahey also will take part in a special session at the annual meeting of the American Nuclear Society in Florida in June. The session, Breakthrough in Fusion Research, will discuss Lahey and his colleagues recent work in bubble fusion. 6/3/02
Steven Liddy, assistant professor of aerospace studies, has been awarded the Leo A. Codd Memorial Award by the National Defense Industrial Association. The award recognizes the most outstanding instructor in the field of aerospace studies. Criteria for the award is not only based on the job performance, but also initiatives in special training projects and civic activities. In addition to his teaching responsibilities Major Liddy serves as the Commandant of Cadets to the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps Detachment 550 at Rensselaer. 6/3/02
Toh-Ming Lu, professor of physics, has received the 2002 William H. Wiley Distinguished Faculty Award. Established by Edward P. Hamilton '07 in memory of William H. Wiley (Class of 1886), the award honors those who have won the respect of the faculty through excellence in teaching, productive research, and interest in the totality of the educational process. 6/3/02
Gilbert Maffeo, clinical associate professor, communications and human resources at Rensselaer at Hartford, received the 2002 David M. Darrin Counseling Award, which was established by Darrin (Class of 40) to recognize a faculty member who has made an unusual contribution in the counseling of students. The award is granted each year to one professor who goes above and beyond his duty as a professor to counsel and positively impact the lives of his students. The selection of the award recipient is made by Phalanx, the student leadership honorary society. 6/3/02
James Moore, professor of chemistry, has received the 2002 Jerome Fischbach Faculty Travel Grant. The grant is funded by Jerome Fischbach '38 for contributions faculty members have made to the education and motivation of students. 6/3/02
Margery Whiteman, director of advancement services, has been selected by the Women's Business Council of the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce as one of eight 2002 Women of Excellence. Whiteman will be honored in the Distinguished Career category at the annual Women of Excellence Luncheon to be held June 19 at the Albany Marriott. 6/3/02
