Broadband Center Receives $600,000 in IBM Equipment
Rensselaer's IBM Center for Broadband Data Transport
Science and Technology has received $600,000 worth of equipment
through the IBM Shared University Research (SUR) Program.
The
equipment a combination of computer hardware and software
will be used to develop a computer cluster and CAD (computer-aided
design) tools. The cluster will include a server to support the
interaction between Rensselaer researchers and IBM scientists,
engineers, and designers.
The ultimate goal is to develop technology that
will allow researchers from around the globe to network more efficiently
via the Internet.
"The efficient and timely development
of new generations of integrated computers will require improving
computer-aided design and computer processing tools."

"The efficient and timely development of
new generations of integrated computers will require improving
computer-aided design and computer processing tools," says
center director Michael Shur, the Patricia W. and C. Sheldon Roberts
'48 Professor of Solid State Electronics.
The $33 million center was created in July to
establish an advanced information technology infrastructure to
handle massive volumes of Internet traffic, data storage, and
new scientific challenges that require immense computing power.
For more information on the center, go to the center's
Web site.
