Scientists said a newly discovered ring of stars that encircles the Milky Way promises to be an ideal place to study the mysterious dark matter, which makes up most of the mass of the universe, and its role in shaping cosmic structures, according to "Science Times" of the New York Times. The Jan. 14 Times article detailed Rensselaer astrophysicist Heidi Newberg's findings that may alter our concept of the Milky Way and how it was formed. More

Belfort Named Russell Sage Professor of Chemical Engineering

Georges Belfort  

Georges Belfort has been named the Russell Sage Professor of Chemical Engineering at Rensselaer.

Belfort has been a chemical engineering faculty member for 25 years. He is a world-renowned authority on bioseparation, the science of recovering valuable proteins and other biological molecules from the complex mixtures in which they are produced. He's also an expert on the behavior of biological molecules at solid interfaces. More

Engineering a Tool To Fight Cancer

The Albany Times Union featured Badri Roysam's RPI-Trace3D system, which can swiftly map capillaries in a live tumor. Roysam, director of the Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems at Rensselaer, and his students have developed the automated system that is now at use at Harvard. More

Hockey Coach Fridgen Signs Contract Extension

Ken Ralph, director of athletics, has announced that Dan Fridgen has signed a three-year contract extension to remain Rensselaer's head men's hockey coach.

Fridgen, who became the 10th head coach of the men's hockey program in July 1994, is in his ninth season at the helm. He holds a 157-126-27 (.550) record, including four 20-win seasons. The contract extension will keep Fridgen at Rensselaer through the 2005-06 season. More

Wintry Conditions and New Traffic Law Warrant Extra Caution on the Road

A New York state traffic law, in effect beginning this month, requires drivers to stop for pedestrians in any part of a crosswalk. The law applies even if the motorists and walkers are in different lanes of the roadway. More

Recent Graduate Will Be Featured on "Survivor"

Dave Johnson '01 will be a cast member on the newest installment of the popular Survivor reality series. Survivor: Amazon premieres Thursday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m. on the CBS television network. Johnson, who earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical, aeronautical, and nuclear engineering, works for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. More
