"The talent we have as a nation lies within
all of our young people, including women and underrepresented
minorities," said Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson.
"Creative teachers recognize, inspire, and educate these
young pioneers in science, mathematics, and engineering. It will
be through their new ways of thinking, innovative inquiry, and
continuous motivation that our young people, and our nation, will
achieve ever-greater intellectual and scientific endeavors."
"If the region is to fully capitalize on
the opportunities provided by our rapid high-tech expansion, we
will need employees that understand and embrace math and science,"
said Ann Wendth, senior vice president of the Albany-Colonie Regional
Chamber of Commerce, which is the lead organizer of the Summit.
"Teachers are on the front lines in developing the future
work force of this region, so it's appropriate to recognize individuals
who are using innovative approaches to getting students excited
about technology."
To be eligible, teachers must teach students in
kindergarten through grade 12 in a public or private/independent
school located in the 17-county Tech Valley region and have made
extraordinary contributions and brought innovation to the fields
of math, science, or technology teaching. Excellence in teaching
is the main criterion for selection of award recipients. Principals,
administrators, parents, and colleagues are invited to nominate
teachers for review by the Awards and Recognition Committee. Teachers
also are invited and encouraged to nominate themselves.
Applications, guidelines, and program information
are available at www.techvalley.org.
The deadline for applications is Monday, March 3. Applications
should be sent to the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce
at 1 Computer Drive South, Albany, NY 12205.
