John Woods Produces "Berlin's Hidden History"
An
informative and engaging look at the ever-changing architectural
and cultural landscape of Germany's capital is in store for viewers
of Berlin's Hidden History, a documentary by Brian Ladd
and Rensselaer Professor John Woods.
The filmmakers explore the public face of Berlin
as it has been repeatedly transformed from the time of the Prussian
empire through two world wars and walled partitioning to the city's
present glory.
Woods, a professor of electrical, computer, and
systems engineering at Rensselaer, produced and edited the 53-minute
piece. Ladd, a historian who taught at Rensselaer from 1992 through
1998, did the writing and narration. Both shared shooting and
directing.
Berlin's Hidden History goes behind the
scenes of skyscrapers, modern office and apartment buildings,
monuments, parks, sculptures, restored synagogues, forgotten cemeteries,
and wartime ruins, to recall the city's grand and often ugly heritage.
In doing so, Ladd and Woods show that much of Berlin's varied
history is hidden from the casual visitor, sometimes intentionally,
sometimes accidentally.
Copies of Berlin's Hidden History are available
at Rensselaer's Folsom Library, or can be purchased at Amazon.Com.
