Garde Wins NSF CAREER Award
Shekhar Garde wins CAREER Award Shekhar Garde, assistant professor of chemical engineering, received a Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). He will use the five-year, $374,965 grant to develop computer simulation tools for understanding and modeling how biological molecules self-assemble in water-based solutions.

T-Rays Could Speed and Improve Diagnoses, Researchers Say
Xi-Cheng Zhang, the J. Erik Jonsson '22 Distinguished Professor of Science, and a team of researchers are the first to image tissue using single pulses of terahertz (THz or T-ray) radiation. The technique will improve diagnostic time from hours or days, down to minutes or seconds.

Small Robots, Big Payoff
In a new manufacturing method, nanoscale robots could be used in assembly-line-like fashion to create minuscule machines that could repair cells inside the human body. Researchers in Rensselaer's Center for Automation Technology (CAT) are using the Clean Room to build these robots. More

Celebrating 100 Years of Rensselaer Hockey
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Rensselaer will celebrate "100 Years of Rensselaer Hockey" with a series of events. The day kicks off with the annual Alumni Hockey Game at the Houston Field House. The puck will drop at noon for this free event. The celebration continues at the Big Red Freakout Ice House, followed by the 25th Anniversary Big Red Freakout hockey game. More


Lockheed Martin To Host This Year's Archer Leadership Conference
The Archer Center for Student Leadership Development will hold its annual leadership conference from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 26, in the Rensselaer Union.
This year's conference, sponsored by Lockheed Martin, will center around the theme "Leading Change in a Wide Open World." More

Peering Deeper Into the Milky Way
Heidi Jo Newberg, associate professor of physics, and Brian Yanny, an astrophysicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, are leading a team of researchers with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) that has announced they have identified new star structures in the halo of the Milky Way. Their research could alter the standard model of the galaxy and has implications for how the Milky Way was formed. Their findings were reported at the recent annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Washington, D.C., and will be published in the Astrophysical JournalMore

Industry Week names professors Jonathan Dordick and Martin Glicksman among 30 R&D "Stars to Watch" in 2002. The magazine says it "celebrates the contributions of individuals who drive innovation and provide the initial spark to economic growth." In 1999, IW named President Shirley Ann Jackson to the list.
