New Seed Funding Grants Announced
The Office of Research has provided $553,965 of
seed funding grants to 12 research projects on campus. The projects
cover a range of research from nanofabrication, grid computing,
and laser microscopy to the study of mammalian cells and human
cognition.
The
funds were provided through Rensselaer's Research Seed Funding
Program, designed to support innovative and interdisciplinary
projects that have a high probability of attracting major external
funding.
"The Seed Funding Program is working,"
said Wolf von Maltzahn, associate vice president for research.
"It supports interesting and diverse research projects throughout
Rensselaer while at the same time leveraging the Institute's investment
and helping to build innovative new research programs."
A mid-term review of last year's seed funding
projects showed that the program is accomplishing its stated goals,
according to von Maltzahn. Not only have the recipients of these
funds made significant scientific progress, they also wrote and
submitted proposals to major funding agencies, he said.
The 12 funded projects were chosen from among
53 applications, and represent more than 30 faculty members from
four schools and nine departments. The typical award given was
$50,000, with emphasis on funding graduate students for developing
new ideas and generating preliminary data in pursuit of external
funding.
For more information see the
list of the funded projects and faculty investigators.
