Accolades

Audrey Bennett, assistant professor of language, literature, and communication, was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Upstate New York Chapter, for a two-year term from 2002 to 2004. 2/24/03

B. Wayne Bequette, professor and acting chair of chemical engineering, has published a textbook on Process Control: Modeling, Design and Simulation (Prentice Hall, 2003). In January he gave an invited plenary talk on "Model Predictive Control of Nonlinear Processes" at an International Symposium on Process Systems Engineering and Control at IIT-Mumbai, India. While there he spent New Year's Eve with two former students, Phani Sistu and Ravi Gopinath (both Ph.D.s '94) and their families. He also presented a lecture at their company, TATA Consultancy Services. While he was away, Bequette's wife, Patricia Fahy, was elected president of the Albany School District Board of Education. 2/24/03

William Hart-Davidson, assistant professor of language, literature, and communication, was appointed program committee member for ACM SIGDOC 2003 Conference to be held in San Francisco Oct. 12-15. He was also appointed manuscript review coordinator for the journal Technical Communication. 2/24/03

Robert Klancko, adjunct lecturer, Department of Engineering and Science at Rensselaer at Hartford, was reappointed as a member of the Connecticut Emergency Response Commission by the Honorable John G. Rowland, governor of Connecticut. The commission implements the provisions of the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act and designates local planning districts. In addition, the commission establishes local emergency planning committees for each local planning district. 2/24/03

Alan Nadel, professor of language, literature, and communication, is a member of the executive committee of the Society for the Study of Narrative Literature and attended a board meeting in New York City in December. 2/24/03

Langdon Winner, professor of science and technology studies, was the 2002 John D. MacArthur Visiting Professor of University Studies at Colgate University. 2/24/03

Several Rensselaer faculty members spoke as part of the Capital Region's celebration of National Engineers Week, titled "Engineering: Improving Today for Tomorrow," on Feb. 12 at the Albany Marriott. Rensselaer seminar facilitators included: Mecit Cetin, post-doctorate research associate in civil and environmental engineering, A Traffic Simulation Model for the I-90 Test Bed; Lester A. Gerhardt, associate dean of engineering, Roles, Responsibilities & Education of the 21st Century Engineer; Jose Holguin-Veras, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, On the Economic/Financial Feasibility of Toll Truckways; James Kilduff, Kodak associate professor in environmental engineering and associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, Membrane Processes in Water Treatment; George List, professor and department head of civil and environmental engineering, High Speed Rail; Howard Littman, professor emeritus of chemical engineering, Effects of Dry Premixing of Sand & Cement on the Mechanical Properties of Mortar; Michael D. Symans, associate professor in civil and environmental engineering, Recent Developments in Seismic Testing Capabilities at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; and John Van Derlofske, Lighting Research Center senior research scientist, Roadway Lighting and Visibility. 2/18/03
