Fairchild Semiconductor Joins PDE Program
The departments of electrical, computer, and systems
engineering (ECSE) and professional and distance education (PDE)
have announced a new educational partnership with Fairchild Semiconductor,
a major manufacturer of power semiconductors with design and manufacturing
facilities worldwide. More than 30 Fairchild engineers in Utah,
California, and Pennsylvania have begun graduate courses at Rensselaer,
leading to a certificate in semiconductor power device technology.
The
courses are being delivered as part of RSVP, Rensselaer's distributed
education program, through a combination of videotape and online
interaction between faculty and students. Future delivery modes
may include interactive delivery via the Internet or CD, as well
as a blend of synchronous and asynchronous technologies to promote
faculty and student interaction.
Patricia Heatwole, Fairchild's manager of training,
said that the company chose Rensselaer for the outstanding reputation
of its power semiconductor curriculum and the prominent research
of Professor Paul Chow. Additionally, Rensselaer and Fairchild
are currently exploring potential collaborative research efforts
to develop the next generation of high-efficiency power devices.
