* Rensselaer Staff Member Selected To Serve on Tech Valley Education Panel

As efforts increase to attract high-technology businesses to Tech Valley, the public and private sectors must start now to train workers for those future jobs, according to a report released by four regional Workforce Investment Boards Dec. 8. Barbara Ruel, director of Rensselaer's Women in Engineering Program and the Women at Rensselaer Mentor Program, has been invited to join a group of area education leaders examining how to prepare Tech Valley's skilled workforce to meet the demands of the growing business sector.

Ruel will serve as a member of the Select Seminar on Tech Valley's Educational Impact, a distinguished group of teachers, administrators, and board members brought together by the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA).

"As Tech Valley grows, so too will the region's need for a skilled workforce in science, math, and engineering," said Ruel. "Rensselaer has a number of modeled programs and ongoing activities working with area educators and students to raise math, science, and engineering skills. Participating in the seminar is an opportunity to share what we have learned about what works."

The 31-member panel from around the 18-county Tech Valley region will examine the educational programs students will require to develop the basic science, mathematics, and technology skills for the emerging industries; the skills and competencies teachers need to educate students on the required science, mathematics, and technological skills; the role colleges and universities have in preparing prospective teachers in these areas; and the role businesses can play in the process.

Reports from the seminar will be published by CASDA and circulated regionally and nationally. CASDA has been sponsoring Select Seminars on excellence in education since 1985.
