President Shirley Ann Jackson convened an assembly of biotechnology faculty on Nov. 29 to discuss the status of biotech initiatives at the Institute. President Jackson congratulated Robert Palazzo, who was named director of the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies the previous week, and highlighted the addition of senior constellation chairs in biocatalysis and metabolic engineering and biocomputation and bioinformatics, as well as new faculty appointments in departments such as biology and chemistry and chemical biology.

President Jackson addressed the opportunities and challenges of recruiting world-renowned research faculty and top-notch graduate and post-doctoral students for collaborative research.

"Here at Rensselaer, we have a remarkable opportunity to marry engineering to biology, to nanotechnology, to chemistry, to information technology, and the list goes on," she said. "The open design of this center is both a physical manifestation, and a metaphor, for how we work, as collaboration and interaction are encouraged and supported."

During a question-and-answer session, President Jackson encouraged faculty to take an active role in planning the implementation of biotechnology programs at Rensselaer, shaping graduate programs, and increasing public understanding about biotechnology research. "I am calling on you to be discoverers and innovators, as you already are, but also to be leaders who can help to deepen public understanding and garner public support for this work," she said. "Society must value this work, and, as your research is leading us to a safer, more secure, and healthier world, the benefits of what you do are clear."
