* Adam Oates '85 To Be Honored Nov. 5

Legendary hockey player Adam Oates '85 will return to the Houston Field House on Friday, Nov. 5 to be inducted into the Rensselaer Athletics Hall of Fame and join in the "Black Friday" festivities beginning at 7 p.m. Fans will celebrate Adam Oates Night, honoring arguably the best hockey player in school history who went on to a tremendous career in the National Hockey League.

Oates will be inducted into the Rensselaer Athletics Hall of Fame during the second intermission of Rensselaer's men's hockey game against Clarkson.  In addition, there will be an unveiling of Oates's number in the Houston Field House rafters, initiating the school's Hockey Ring of Honor. Oates will also take part in that night's second annual Black Friday festivities, as he will don a special, one-of-a-kind black jersey, which will be auctioned off during the evening.

"I am honored to be inducted into RPI's Athletics Hall of Fame and excited to see the Ring of Honor started," Oates said.  "I am looking forward to being back on campus, being at the rink and seeing some familiar faces."

Oates played three seasons for the Engineers, leading the men's hockey team to the 1985 NCAA National Championship. That year, he established school single season records for points (91) and assists (60) as well as career assists (150), all of which he still holds.  He also scored 66 goals in his 110 collegiate games. A two-time All-American and All-ECAC selection, he led Rensselaer in assists every year, helping the team to an overall record of  85-19-1 (.814) and two league championships.

A management major from Weston, Ont., Oates went on to score 341 goals with 1,079 assists for 1,420 points in 1,337 games for seven NHL teams. A five-time All-Star Game participant, he retired this spring ranking fifth all time in NHL history in assists and 13th in points.

"We are extremely excited to have Adam back on campus," said Director of Athletics Ken Ralph.  "He is someone who has brought a lot of notoriety to the Institute and we are thrilled to show our appreciation.  It should be a fun night."

On Black Friday, which marks the first ECAC Hockey League home game, the Engineers wear special black jerseys for that game only. During the first and second periods, fans have an opportunity to take part in an auction to purchase the game-worn sweaters, including Oates's, which will be worn for that night's game only.
