| Rensselaer Shows Its Heart More than 160 Rensselaer students, faculty, and staff participated in the 2004 Capital Region Heart Walk on Oct. 2, raising nearly $27,000 for the American Heart Association's fight against heart disease and stroke. The Institute is a corporate sponsor of the event.
Rensselaer raised the third largest amount of money among the 83 corporate teams in the walk. Student athletes came out in force for the heart walk. Members of Rensselaer's women's ice hockey team raised more than $5,000 for "Team BC" in honor of their former coach, Bill Cahill, who died suddenly of a heart attack last October. Athletes from the women's basketball and field hockey teams joined in support. The men's baseball team walked in honor of the former assistant baseball coach and sports information director, James Greenidge. Mueller Center staff member Patti Mugrace assisted the students in their organizing efforts. The School of Science organized "Team Flaherty" in support of Dean Joe Flaherty, who is recovering from a stroke he had in June. Scott Richards, Rensselaer's director of environmental and site services, coordinated all of the logistics for the walk. And, Rensselaer's Pep Band was playing along the route. "I am so proud of the Institute's participation in the 2004 Heart Walk," said Claude Rounds, Rensselaer's vice president for administration and a volunteer member of the executive committee for the event. "Rensselaer's commitment to this community was so clear all along the route, with our students, faculty and staff wearing their Rensselaer sweatshirts and team T-shirts." The American Heart Association is the largest voluntary health organization fighting heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases in local communities throughout America. Researchers in Rensselaer's School of Science receive funding from the American Heart Association. |
