Local High School Students Rensselaer recently hosted the first Capital District Materials Camp for local high school students. Eighteen juniors and seniors from high schools in Rensselaer, Albany, and Saratoga Counties were guided by approximately 35 materials scientists and engineers from Rensselaer, GE Global Research, and Lockheed-Martin/KAPL who volunteered to lead demonstrations, tours, and learning activities during the four day camp on campus. Student projects included understanding the metallurgy of a steel drum, materials testing and selection for bicycles and skis, and analysis of dental materials. Students also took a tour of GE Global Research facilities in Niskayuna, N.Y. Daniel Lewis, materials scientist at GE Global Research and organizer of the Materials Camp, hopes to continue the camp each summer. "The goal of this camp is to teach young people about materials science and engineering and possibly interest them in a career field," he said. "We encourage students to think about the connections between the products they use every day and material composition." The Materials Camp, held June 29 to July 2, was jointly sponsored by the ASM Materials Education Foundation and the TMS Foundation in coordination with the ASM Eastern New York Chapter and the TMS Hudson-Mohawk Chapter. Organizers asked high school science teachers to encourage interested students to apply. Photos by Tiffany Lohwater |
