| Out and About: Reunion "Renaissance Fair" and Keynote Address Rensselaer hosted a "Renaissance Fair" to showcase some of the Institute's key accomplishments, and a keynote address by Sean O'Sullivan '85. The events, part of the 2005 Reunion activities, were held June 10 in the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies.
The "Renaissance Fair" included presentations and exhibits on nanotechnology, biotechnology, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center now under construction, the School of Humanities and Social Science Game Arts and Sciences program, and Rensselaer's athletics programs. Visitors also had the opportunity to see the Molecularium show, a state-of-the art computer-generated animation program for children of all ages, developed by Rensselaer faculty, staff, and students that was shown in an inflatable dome.
Following the fair, Sean O'Sullivan '85 gave the keynote address in the auditorium, announcing plans for a September launch of the "change the world challenge," an entrepreneurship program to support students in their pursuit of ideas that will change the world. O'Sullivan discussed his ideas for the creation of "Engineers Without Borders," and his experience as founder of Jumpstart International, a non-governmental organization created in 2003 that focuses on rebuilding and reconstruction in war-torn Iraq. O'Sullivan is also one of the founders of MapInfo, a global software company headquartered in Rensselaer's Technology Park. (See a Fall 2004 Rensselaer Magazine profile of O'Sullivan.
