| Commencement 2005: Faculty Honored With Annual Awards Several Rensselaer faculty members have been honored with annual Institute awards.
"Professor McLaughlin has offered himself to all of his students in many ways," one nomination read. "He has offered to actively go out and help them find jobs and internships or to visit other institutions to do research. He has spent hours with students designing schedules that will meet their needs, many of which include independent studies with him, when there is no course on a topic. He has helped students work through personal problems and problems with other professors." "I see Professor McLaughlin serve as the prime example of what an advisor should be. He is responsive toward and aware of students' concerns and situations. He encourages students to learn and take ownership of their education," said another nominator. Other faculty members honored with awards: Nikhil Koratkar, assistant professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, received the Rensselaer Early Career Award, which honors productivity in both teaching and research.
Sharon Anderson-Gold, professor and chair of science and technology studies, received the Jerome Fischbach Faculty Travel Grant, which is funded by Jerome Fischbach '38 for contributions faculty members have made to the education and motivation of students. Deepak Vashishth, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, received the Class of 1951 Outstanding Teaching Award Fellowship, established by the Class of 1951 to recognize faculty members for their outstanding accomplishments in education. Other Rensselaer faculty awards include the Rensselaer Alumni Association Teaching Award, which will be presented to Gregory N. Hughes '67, clinical professor of economics, and decision sciences and engineering systems, at the RAA Awards Dinner during Reunion weekend; and the Trustees' Outstanding Teacher Award, which was presented to Kenneth Warriner Jr., associate professor of architecture, at the 2004 Honors Convocation held last fall. |
