RAA Fellows Award: James K. Allred
Allred serves as a member of Rensselaer's Decision Sciences and Engineering Systems (DSES) Industrial Advisory Board, and assisted the department in establishing Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) objectives. In addition, Allred has served as a consultant for more than 10 years with DSES faculty, where he provided insight into the future of material handling and logistics, emphasized the need for integration of research into educational activities, and helped Rensselaer's Electronic Agile Manufacturing Research Institute (EAMRI) attract partner companies since its founding in 1993. An expert in the industry, Allred has worked in a variety of capacities. As vice president of factory automation systems at SI Handling, he developed large automotive handling systems and pioneered the concept of flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), which is currently being used in a range of industries. In 1985 he was recruited by Intel to build a factory automation system. He also worked for Schindler-Digitron (a Swiss company) to establish its North American operations. A successful entrepreneur, in 1989 Allred founded ESKAY Corporation (now Daifuku America Corporation), a material handling and logistics company. Earlier in his career he co-founded Kenway Engineering, an automated material handling company. Allred holds three patents and has written more than 200 articles, speeches, and conference presentations; his insights have been widely referenced in leading industry publications. The Rensselaer Alumni Association Fellows Award was created in the fall of 1987 by the Board of the Association. It honors those alumni or friends of Rensselaer who, by their achievements in a chosen profession or endeavor or by their service to the Institute, have set an example for the Rensselaer community to emulate. To date, 136 RAA Fellows Awards have been presented. |
