Rensselaer Represented at FIRST National Robotics Competition
"We hope to excite these students to follow careers in math, science, and engineering," said Paul Schoch, associate professor of electrical, computer, and systems engineering at Rensselaer. "In the short term, FIRST encourages more of them to stick with math and science in high school. In the long term, we hope to see them as the technological leaders of tomorrow." The competition is a multinational event that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. This year's FIRST Competition has involved nearly 25,000 high-school-aged young people on close to 1,000 teams in 30 competitions. Rensselaer faculty and students assisted the three teams with the design and programming behind their robots, all of which won major awards in the FIRST regional competitions. According to Professor Schoch, the goal is for high school students to work on a hands-on engineering project, with guidance and instruction from professionals. Schoch and several Rensselaer students joined the high school teams at the Atlanta competition. "We have to be as excited about robotics competitions as we are about sporting events," said Rensselaer President Shirley Ann Jackson, who also attended the FIRST competition. "The enthusiasm that Professor Schoch and his students impart to these high school teams is inspirational indeed. We are proud to help our young peopleand to contribute to the development of the next generation of scientists and engineersby participating in the FIRST experience." |
