The United States Track Coaches Association has named Rensselaer's track & field head coach, Colin Tory, the 2004 National Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year. Tory, who is in his fourth season as the head coach of Rensselaer's men's and women's programs, was honored at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships in Whitewater, Wis., March 12-13.
Tory was also recognized as one of only eight Division III coaches around the country to earn a Regional Coach of the Year Award.
This season, Tory led Rensselaer's men's team to the New York State Collegiate Track Championship (NYSCTC) Meet title, earning Men's Coach of the Year honors. In addition, two Rensselaer men Dwaine Alleyne and Joe Otto earned National All-American honors while two women also participated in the National Championships.
Last year, Tory was named the Men's Outdoor Regional Coach of the Year after leading Rensselaer to its second consecutive New York State Collegiate Track Championship Meet title with a meet record 204 points. He was also named the NYSCTC Men's Coach of the Year for the second straight season. In addition, three male student-athletes earned National All-American honors and two others were College Division Track & Field/Cross Country National Academic All-Americans.
Tory, who also coaches the Engineers' men's and women's cross country teams, is in his eighth season at Rensselaer. Prior to taking over as head coach during the 2001-02 season, he was an assistant coach for four years. Tory has coached 10 NCAA All-Americans, more than 40 school record performers, more than a dozen Academic All-District Team members, and numerous National Academic All-Americans.
