Senior Swimmer Becomes National Champion
Rensselaer student-athlete Meghan Hartman became a national champion after winning the 200-breaststroke at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming & Diving National Championships in St. Louis, Mo., March 13. Hartman, a senior who finished with a time of 2:19.27, is Rensselaer's first-ever national champion in swimming.
Hartman, who earlier in the meet finished 14th in the 200-individual medley (2:10.99), finished 55 tenths of a second ahead of Michele Rennie of Puget Sound for the victory.
This is the fourth straight year Hartman, a native of Seattle, Wash., has qualified for the NCAAs. She is now a seven-time National All-American, including twice as a junior. The civil engineering major has earned the honor in the 200-individual medley (twice), the 400-IM (three times), and in the 200 breaststroke.
This season, Hartman, a graduate of Garfield High School who has broken numerous school records at Rensselaer, has been recognized as the Women's Swimmer of the Week seven times by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) and three times by the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). She also earned Swimmer of the Meet at the New York State Meet.
Additionally at the meet, junior Melissa Hershey finished eighth in the 3-meter diving event to earn National All-American honors. She was also 14th in the 1-meter diving event to earn Honorable Mention honors. The top eight finishers in the finals of each event earn All-American status. Those who finish between 9th and 16th are Honorable Mention All-Americans.
On the men's side, junior Pat Fell finished 12th in the 200-yard freestyle to earn All-American Honorable Mention status at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving National Championships in St. Louis, Mo., March 18. Fell swam the finals in a time of 1:42.49.
