Yacub Addy in Concert With Wynton Marsalis on BET

Last spring, Ghanaian drum master and Rensselaer music professor Yacub Addy and his ensemble, Odadaa!, performed two concerts with jazz composer and trumpeter Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra at Columbia College in New York City as part of the Jazz at Lincoln Center’s outreach programs.

Footage from the concerts will air on the BET network in two broadcasts. Africa Jazz, Part 1 will air on Sunday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. and Africa Jazz, Part 2 will air Sunday, Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. The shows are part of BET’s Journey With Jazz at Lincoln Center series.

Addy, who teaches a popular music class in Ghanaian drumming at Rensselaer, formed Odadaa! in 1982. The ensemble grew out of a succession of groups formed by Addy beginning in 1957 first in Ghana, then in Europe and the United States. Odadaa! combines African percussion, rich vocals, and traditional African dance. Wynton Marsalis was awarded an honorary doctorate of fine arts at Rensselaer at Rensselaer's 1996 Commencement ceremony. 12/8/02

Parking Garage Signup Under Way

Core-lot (“C”) permit-holders will be given first preference for spaces in the new 500-car parking garage, which is scheduled to open in mid January. If you have core parking and would like garage parking, e-mail parking@rpi.edu by Dec. 15. You do not need to come to the parking office; your transponder will be reprogrammed for garage access.

After Dec. 15, garage parking will be available to all other faculty and staff on a first-come, first-served basis. If all the spaces have not been allocated by Feb. 1, 2004, post-doctoral and graduate students will be offered the option of garage parking for the spring 2004 semester. Any remaining parking would then be opened to all other students (except for freshmen) on a first-come, first-served basis for the spring semester. If you have questions, contact Carol Wagar at ext. 8528. 12/8/02

Snow Emergency Parking for Off-Campus Personnel
Students, faculty, and staff who would otherwise park on the city streets will be able to park in the North Lot when the City of Troy declares a snow emergency on city streets, according to Rensselaer’s Parking Office. Vehicles must display a Snow Emergency Permit, which can be obtained free of charge from Rensselaer's Parking Office during regular business hours. Or, apply online for your Snow Emergency Permit at http://www.pt.rpi.edu/ under permit management.

If you already have a Rensselaer parking permit, you do not need to obtain a Snow Emergency Permit. Your permit will be valid during Snow Emergencies.

The last four rows of the North Lot in the northwest corner will be made available during snow emergencies and the parking entry gates will be in the up position. Parking is allowed for the duration of the snow emergency. Permits are valid for the entire semester, including during semester breaks.

Information about snow emergencies and parking restrictions is available by calling 274-TROY (8769) or by checking Rensselaer's Campus Parking Web site at http://squirrel.pt.rpi.edu/. For further information, contact the Parking Office at ext. 6616. 11/10/03
