John Harrington, dean of humanities and social sciences, presented a talk titled "What Makes Metropolitan/Urban Institutions Distinctive?" at the Conference of Colleges of Arts and Sciences in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 12-14. The presentation highlighted Rensselaer's community-based information technology research and raised important questions involving the distinction between research and community service, and how institutions of higher learning can differentiate between, but support, both. 12/1/03
Three Rensselaer student-athletes have been chosen to the 2003 Academic All-District 1 College Division Football Team as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Seniors Flynn Cochran, Alexander Keel, and Ray Noonan have all been selected to the First Team and are now eligible for National Academic All-American consideration. 12/1/03
Student-athletes Sondra Sherman and Laurie Young have both been chosen to the 2003 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) North Atlantic Region Second Team. Sherman, a junior, and Young, a sophomore, shared the team scoring lead with 16 points apiece. 12/1/03
Nelson Brownell, manager of IT computer operations, was named the 2003 Citizen Planner of the Year by the Vermont Planners Association recently. Brownell received the award from Vermont Governor James Douglas. Brownell was commended for his work developing an $18,000 sewer system in Pownal and for his work creating an 800-acre recreational land preserve. Brownell also received a New England-wide award, the 2003 Outstanding Citizen Planner award from the New England Chapter of the American Planning Association. 11/17/03
Jon Finke, senior systems programmer in networking and telecommunications, presented a paper titled "Generating Configuration Files: The Director's Cut" at the LISA 2003 (Large Installation Systems Administration) conference in San Diego recently. Three Rensselaer student-athletes have been selected to the 2003 District 1 College Division Soccer All-Academic Teams as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Senior Laura Feeney and sophomore Ed Sellitto have been named to the women's and men's First Team, respectively, and junior Katie Fredlund was selected to the Second Team. As first team honorees, Feeney and Sellitto are now eligible for National Academic All-American consideration. To be eligible for academic honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). 11/17/03
Three Rensselaer student-athletes have been selected by the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) for year-end soccer awards. Junior forward Katie Fredlund was named to the All-UCAA First Team while junior Jessica Chetuck, a defender, was selected to the Second Team. In men's soccer, sophomore Joe Johnson was selected to the All-UCAA First Team as a defender. 11/17/03
Rensselaer student-athlete Laurie Young has been chosen for post-season field hockey honors by two organizations. The sophomore has been selected to the All-Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Second Team as well as the All-New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) Second Team. 11/17/03 |
