Rensselaer has garnered national media attention recently. Most notably, a Discovery Channel program included a segment featuring Xi-Cheng Zhangs leading work in terahertz research. Zhang is director of Rensselaers Center for Terahertz Research.

- The Associated Press profiled Connecticut high-school senior Rob Sobelman who, while doing an internship at Rensselaer, made a notable scientific discovery in improving the process of making carbon nanotubes. Sobelmans research was overseen by top nanotechnology experts during his summer internship at Rensselaer. The story appeared in USA Today, among others.
- The Chicago Tribune, Anderson Independent-Mail in South Carolina, and the Contra Costa Times in California carried an Albany Times Union story quoting Bob Sands, assistant dean of undergraduate programs at the Lally School of Management and Technology, in a story about laughter in the workplace.
- Aerospace engineering professor Prabhat Hajela, who is on leave working in the U.S. Senate for the year, was profiled in the Billings Montana Gazette. Hajela is working on technology issues for Montana Senator Conrad Burns.
- Machine Design covered a story about bone spackle research headed by George Plopper, assistant professor of biology.
- WAMCs The Best of Our Knowledge featured a story about Rensselaers new Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory as part of the programs series on important developments in educational research. The story ran on public radio affiliates around the country.
