Student Architects Win International Design Acclaim

Two Rensselaer architecture students have received awards in an international juried competition for their original design of a mobile HIV/AIDS health clinic to be used in sub-Saharan Africa. The competition, sponsored by Architecture for Humanity, sought designs for a fully equipped, mobile medical unit and treatment center that could be used for testing, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS, and to disseminate information and provide basic health-care services. Zhang Named Fellow of American Physical Society

Xi-Cheng Zhang, the J. Erik Jonsson '22 Distinguished Professor of Science and director of Rensselaer's Center for Terahertz Research, has been named a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) for pioneering contributions to free-space terahertz optics, particularly the successful development of terahertz wave generation, sensing, and imaging. Rensselaer is part of a $1 million pilot research project to develop a system to observe, monitor, and collect data on and about the Hudson River. The "Hudson Riverscope" is a joint project of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University, and Rensselaer that will monitor the Hudson River in order to protect the historic waterway. More than 30 individuals representing a dozen Troy businesses turned out to a Rensselaer-sponsored forum Nov. 20 to discuss how to invigorate these key commercial corridors. The business leaders learned of several opportunities for collaboration with Rensselaer, the Troy Architectural Program (TAP), and the city to make the area between 15th Street and Congress Street a vibrant and bustling gateway. The Material Handling Education Foundation's (MHEF). Board of Directors has presented Robert Graves, professor of decision sciences and engineering systems, with the 2002 Reed-Apple Award, the most prestigious award in material handling logistics. More

Students presenting final projects for Burt Swersey's Inventor's Studio class showed off the fruits of their labor at the O.T. Swanson Multidisciplinary Design Laboratory Dec. 4. The group pictured developed a "Performance Monitoring Device" for exercise enthusiasts that monitors its users' workouts in a variety of activities, provides feedback, and keeps track of progress. Other projects included a "Dynamic Water Ski and Performance Monitor," an "Exercise Hoop," and an "Automatic Tomato Height Adjustor." More
