Accolades

Aleksander Ostrogorsky, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, has been named an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). According to Kent Kresa, president of AIAA, "AIAA associate fellows are individuals of distinction have made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics and astronautics." 12/9/02

Flynn Cochran '04 has been selected to the 2002 National Verizon Academic All-America College Division Football First Team. A junior wide receiver, Cochran carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 in management with a minor in information technology. Cochran is a multiple Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) All-Academic selection. He is also a member of the Management Honor Society, the Navy ROTC and an Eagle Scout. On the field, Cochran, a captain, helped the Engineers to an 8-2 record, including a victory in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast Championship Game. He led Rensselaer with 66 receptions for 968 yards and five touchdowns. 12/9/02

Susan Gonyea '03 has been chosen to the 2002 National Verizon Academic All-America College Division Women's Soccer Second Team. This is the second straight year that Gonyea has been recognized nationally for her athletic and academic efforts. A forward from Scotia, N.Y., Gonyea has a cumulative grade point average of 3.89 as a civil engineering major with a minor in architecture. A three-time Verizon Academic All-District 1 First Team selection, she was named to the 2001 National Second Team last season. A Rensselaer Medal winner, she has also earned Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) All-Academic standing each of the past three seasons. Gonyea led Rensselaer in scoring in each of her four seasons. This fall she tallied 14 goals and six assists for 34 points in 17 games. She was named to the All-UCAA First Team for her efforts. 12/9/02

Phillip Phan, the Warren H. Bruggeman '46 and Pauline Urban Bruggeman Distinguished Associate Professor of Management in Rensselaer's Lally School of Management and Technology, has edited a new book titled Technological Entrepreneurship. The publication is a collection of research and writings from experts and academics on the subject of global technological entrepreneurship. It first takes readers through a broad overview of the field, and then explores some more specific and emerging areas of entrepreneurship. A volume in the Research in Management and Entrepreneurship thematic book series, Technological Entrepreneurship begins with an introduction written by Phan and ends with a case study written by one of his Lally School colleagues, Professor Pier Abetti. Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2002 has recognized four members of the Rensselaer faculty for educational excellence in this year's edition. Faculty recognized are: Alan Balfour, dean of architecture; J. Keith Nelson, the Philip Sporn Professor of Electric Power Engineering; Neil Rolnick, professor of arts; and Burt Swersey, lecturer in mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering. 12/9/02

Jon Finke, senior systems programmer, presented two papers at the Large Installation Systems Administration (LISA) 2002 conference in Philadelphia Nov. 3-8. The papers were titled "Embracing and Extending Windows 2000" and "Process Monitor: Detecting Events That Didn't Happen." For more, go to http://www.rpi.edu/~finkej/Papers.html. 11/18/02

Joe Johnson '06 has been named the 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year. A freshman defender, Johnson has also been selected to the All-UCAA First Team. Johnson played all 14 games, tallying one goal and two points this season. Defensively, he helped the Red Hawks post a 1.25 goals against average and six shutouts. Rensselaer ended the season with a 7-5-2 overall record. 11/18/02

Frank Lee, assistant professor of cognitive science, received a three-year, $266,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research. He will use the grant to develop a computer model of how people perceive and process time. The research will be useful for, among other things, intelligent tutoring systems and to simulate human behavior in computer games. 11/18/02

Leik Myrabo, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, attended the recent International Symposium on Beamed Energy Propulsion at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Myrabo presented a special award from Rensselaer to Arthur Kantrowitz, the retired chairman of Avco Everett Research Laboratory. 11/18/02

Mark Rea, director of the Lighting Research Center, was the keynote speaker at the Fifth International Lighting Research Symposium Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, Fla. Rea's address led the way for presentations by internationally known speakers, authors, lighting and medical researchers, and technical experts, including LRC lighting researcher Mariana Figueiro, who discussed her pilot study into the effects of light exposure on the behavior of Alzheimer's patients. Figueiro also presented a poster titled "Daylight and Productivity: A Possible Link to Circadian Regulation." 11/18/02
