Why Some Old Bones Break So Easily

Scientists have thought the increased risk of fracture in old age was largely due to loss of bone mass, but Rensselaer researcher Deepak Vashishth says this can't be the only reason. He is now examining bone quality and the differing shapes of microscopic cracks that develop in bones in the course of daily living. His research may increase a doctor's ability to predict — and even reduce fracture — risks for older people. More

Blanchet Receives ASME's Burt Newkirk Award

Thierry Blanchet, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, has received the Burt L. Newkirk Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Blanchet is the 22nd recipient of the award, which is given to individuals who have made notable contributions to research and development in the field of tribology. More

Obituary: Edith Luchins

Edith Luchins, professor emeritus of mathematics, died Nov. 18. She was 80. Luchins, who served as professor of mathematical sciences at Rensselaer from 1962 until 2002, was the first woman to be appointed full professor at Rensselaer. She attained emeritus status in 1992, but continued to be involved in research in the math department. More
