Accolades

Jon Finke, senior systems programmer, presented two papers at the Large Installation Systems Administration (LISA) 2002 conference in Philadelphia Nov. 3-8. The papers were titled "Embracing and Extending Windows 2000" and "Process Monitor: Detecting Events That Didn't Happen." For more, go to http://www.rpi.edu/~finkej/Papers.html. 11/18/02

Joe Johnson '06 has been named the 2002 Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) Men's Soccer Rookie of the Year. A freshman defender, Johnson has also been selected to the All-UCAA First Team. Johnson played all 14 games, tallying one goal and two points this season. Defensively, he helped the Red Hawks post a 1.25 goals against average and six shutouts. Rensselaer ended the season with a 7-5-2 overall record. 11/18/02

Frank Lee, assistant professor of cognitive science, received a three-year, $266,000 grant from the Office of Naval Research. He will use the grant to develop a computer model of how people perceive and process time. The research will be useful for, among other things, intelligent tutoring systems and to simulate human behavior in computer games. 11/18/02

Leik Myrabo, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace, and nuclear engineering, attended the recent International Symposium on Beamed Energy Propulsion at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Myrabo presented a special award from Rensselaer to Arthur Kantrowitz, the retired chairman of Avco Everett Research Laboratory. 11/18/02

Mark Rea, director of the Lighting Research Center, was the keynote speaker at the Fifth International Lighting Research Symposium Nov. 3-5 in Orlando, Fla. Rea's address led the way for presentations by internationally known speakers, authors, lighting and medical researchers, and technical experts, including LRC lighting researcher Mariana Figueiro, who discussed her pilot study into the effects of light exposure on the behavior of Alzheimer's patients. Figueiro also presented a poster titled "Daylight and Productivity: A Possible Link to Circadian Regulation." 11/18/02

Wayne Gray, professor of cognitive sciences, spoke in September at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio on "Soft Constraints on Interactive Behavior: Perspective, Recent Research and Future Directions." 11/11/02

William Luddy Jr., clinical professor in the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer at Hartford, has received two new appointments to the American Bar Association (ABA). The ABA's Section of Science and Technology Law named Luddy as one of four members to its new International Policy Coordinating Council. Additionally, Luddy was named vice chair of the Science and Technology Section's Computer Law Division. The International Policy Coordinating Council serves as the primary link between the Section of Science & Technology Law and international policymakers. 11/11/02

Carl McDaniel, professor of biology, delivered the keynote address at the 107th annual conference and meeting of the Science Teachers Association of New York State (STANYS) Nov. 3-5. McDaniel's address was titled "Hopefulness in a Time of Peril." 11/11/02
