  Elementary Students Get Hands-On Intro to What Really "Matters"
 
  Molecularium
 
More than 20 elementary-school students from the Susan Odell Taylor School visited the country's only "Molecularium" last weekend. Developed by Rensselaer's Nanotechnology Center and the Junior Museum, with funds from the National Science Foundation's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Initiative, the "Molecularium" is designed to introduce students in grades K-3 to simple materials science concepts, including the states of matter — solids, liquids, and gases. Tom Baruch Named to Board

Tom Baruch '60, founder and general partner of CMEA Ventures, began his tenure Dec. 6 as the newest member of the Rensselaer Board of Trustees. He will serve on the board's Audit, Information Technology, and Research committees. More

Anthropology Professor's New Book Explores Taboo Topic of Pregnancy Loss

After suffering the first of seven heartbreaking miscarriages in 1986, Rensselaer anthropology professor Linda Layne vowed to bring to light the subject of pregnancy loss. Now, nearly two decades later, Layne presents her findings in a new book titled Motherhood Lost: A Feminist Account of Pregnancy Loss in America (Routledge, 2003). In it, she challenges society and women's movements to publicly discuss miscarriage and stillbirth and to offer more helpful support for "would-be" parents. More

Accomplishments, Immense Progress Highlighted in President's Message to Faculty

While many other institutions are facing financial hardships, Rensselaer is propelling forward at an unprecedented rate in faculty renewal, securing research money, and improving campus facilities, said President Jackson at the Dec. 4 general faculty meeting.
The meeting drew more than 130 faculty members, including faculty from Rensselaer at Hartford who participated by videoconference. More

LRC Students Transform Learning Experience Into Community Service

Graduate students from Rensselaer's Lighting Research Center (LRC) recently helped shed some objective light on a controversial topic in Bennington, Vt. The students studied issues surrounding an idea to light the historic Bennington Battle Monument. They presented a lighting demonstration and two public forums examining a proposal from a citizen's group to light the 306-foot Revolutionary War monument, which has been the center of heated debate for months. Biotech Center Construction Provides Living Laboratory

Some architecture and engineering students are taking advantage of a major campus building project to explore the nuts and bolts of designing and constructing a new facility. Tracking the Biotechnology Center, a two-credit course currently in its third semester, examines "all the things you do to design a building," said Richard Rittelmann '60, a course instructor and a partner in Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann. The building is designed by the joint venture team of Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann of Butler, Pa., and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of Pittsburgh. More

Obituary: Harry Herbrandson

Harry Herbrandson, former professor of chemistry, died Nov. 12. Herbrandson, who received a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1942 and a doctorate from the University of Illinois in 1945, joined the Rensselaer faculty in 1949. He retired in 1986. Prior to joining Rensselaer, Herbrandson was a research fellow at Harvard University and an assistant professor of chemistry at Union College. More

Intel Honors Kalyanaraman and Donates Equipment
Two representatives of Intel Corporation visited Rensselaer recently to honor Associate Professor Shivkumar Kalyanaraman for his contributions to the Intel IXA University Program. As part of the program, Intel donated 20 IXP1200 network processor development systems, which are the cornerstone of Kalyanaraman's new course, Experimental Networking.

IED Students Bounce Ideas at Final Presentation

Engineering students presented their final projects in Introduction to Engineering Design (IED) on Dec. 6 in the Great Hall of the Darrin Communications Center. IED is a sophomore-level engineering design class in which students are assigned a theme to guide their creativity. This semester, students were challenged to design and build a "Ball Testing Machine" that improves the understanding of ball motion. Approximately 70 teams demonstrated their projects. All Aboard: Vermont Senator Visits Rensselaer's Model Railroad

Vermont Senator Jim Jeffords and his wife, Elizabeth, toured the Rensselaer Model Railroad Society's Railroad Heritage Exhibit Dec. 9. Jeffords, who was traveling through the area, had read a recent article about the exhibit in a Rutland newspaper. The model railroad exhibit, located in the basement of Davison Hall, depicts the fictitious New England, Berkshire & Western Railroad in the 1950s. A large portion of the exhibit depicts Vermont and in particular the Rutland Rail Yard. Click here for more photos.
