Some architecture and engineering students are
taking advantage of a major campus building project to explore
the nuts and bolts of designing and constructing a new facility.
Tracking the Biotechnology Center, a two-credit course
currently in its third semester, examines "all the things
you do to design a building," said Richard Rittelmann '60,
a course instructor and a partner in Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann.
The building is designed by the joint venture team of Burt Hill
Kosar Rittelmann of Butler, Pa., and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson of
Pittsburgh.

Rittelmann, who flies in from Pennsylvania every
two weeks to instruct the class, saw an opportunity in having
a building being constructed on campus to "use it as part
of the educational experience." He designed the course with
help from Mark Mistur, clinical associate professor of architecture,
George List, professor and chair of civil engineering, and Bruce
Kunkel, manager of planning and space utilization. Approximately
12 juniors and seniors are currently enrolled.

"This is my third semester in the course
and it has gone far beyond my expectations," said architecture
graduate student Brendan Harnett '02. "It has been a great
introduction to the long and drawn out contract, legal, and environmental
process that leads to the construction of a building."
Tracking the Biotech Center is slated to
continue for two more semesters. The biotechnology center is scheduled
to open in 2004.
