Bruce Kunkel Named Manager of Planning
and Space Utilization
The Administrative Division has named Bruce
Kunkel '71 as manager of planning and space utilization.
In his new role, Kunkel will work closely with the Space
Utilization, Management and Allocation Committee (SUMAC)
in its mission to manage overall space utilization on campus.
The five-member committee was created by President Jackson
last year.
Kunkel,
who reports to director of campus planning and facilities
design, will assist in developing scenarios and will make
recommendations to the committee to provide the "highest
and best use" of all buildings as outlined in the Rensselaer
Plan. That includes the soon-to-be constructed biotechnology
building and the electronic media and performing arts center.
"Rensselaer is placing an unprecedented
demand on space utilization. In light of this, we need
to ensure that the campus is using every bit of space
efficiently and effectively."

SUMAC's recommendations will lead to uniform
policies and procedures regarding building utilization,
such as the distribution of spaces when faculty, staff,
and students move into the new facilities.
"In its mission to become a world-class
university, Rensselaer is placing an unprecedented demand
on space utilization," Kunkel says. "In light
of this, we need to ensure that the campus is using every
bit of space efficiently and effectively."
Kunkel graduated from Rensselaer with a
bachelor's degree in building sciences, a bachelor's in
architecture, and a master's in architecture. He became
a Rensselaer staff member in 1973.
Kunkel, who was major projects construction
manager prior to his new position, was instrumental in the
design and construction of Barton Hall, the high-tech freshman
residence hall opened last year. He more recently has been
involved in the planning of the new biotechnology building.
To fill some of Kunkel's prior responsibilities,
the Administrative Division has hired Oleh Turczak as the
project manager who will directly oversee the design and
construction of the biotechnology building and a parking
garage.
